MATCH PREVIEW | Scholarship host Leopards this Wednesday

After a heavy loss last time out, Leeds Rhinos Scholarship look to bounce back on Wednesday night as they clash with Leigh Leopards at Stanningley, kick off 7pm.

A 58-0 defeat at the hands of Hull FC a week ago saw a young Rhinos side leave Humberside empty-handed - a disappointing result after grinding out a tough 18-10 victory over Bradford in round one. As they approach the halfway stage of the Under-16s season, the visit of Leigh Leopards allows Simon Brown's side to make amends against a side that they held to a 66-0 scoreline in 2025, whilst also allowing the side's youngest talents to continue developing week by week. Brown has been unafraid to give gametime to his first-year players - including Oliver Brown, Eli Kirrane-Perrin and Laike Smith who have played both games this year - and handed Jaylen Johnson, Myles Hartley, Luca Brindley and Evan Armstrong their first Scholarship minutes in the loss to Hull.

Henry Brough has been a leader amongst the squad's older players - notably scoring a long range effort in the win over Bradford - whilst hooker Jordan Barker-Day and forwards Oscar Brown, Dillon Eshun and Ben Smith have been mainstays in the pack.

Four tries from centre Noah Sheriffe helped the Rhinos to a convincing win in the first meeting with the Leopards at the Under-16s level 12 months ago, and a similar result for the Rhinos on Wednesday night would provide some confidence with Yorkshire clashes against Huddersfield and Wakefield awaiting later this month.

Leigh come into the fixture off the back of a heavy loss themselves last time out as they fell to a 46-10 loss against St Helens at the BrewDog Stadium, but the Leopards already have one win against a Yorkshire side under their belt in 2026.

With Martyn Ridyard taking over as Head of Youth at the start of 2026, the Leopards got their new season underway with a well-deserved 34-12 result on home soil against Wakefield Trinity but couldn't continue their form last time out in the defeat to Saints. This week's game against the Rhinos is the first of two tough tests as Wigan await Leigh next week, as well as a trip to take on the Bulls at Odsal at the end of the month.
